THE LIBRARY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW sweeps you up and doesn't let you go. As usual, M.J. Rose has given us an utterly enchanted story filled with fascinating, mysterious people and the most gorgeous houses, each which have their secrets. The principle house in this book is a French castle owned by the early 20th-century singer Emma Calvé who dealt in the occult; in this book the castle hides endless secret rooms. The young heroine Delpine Duplessi is invited there with her beloved twin brother who has his own secrets; Delphine, a descendant of the witch/enchantress La Lune, has inadvertently brought sorrow to friends and the end of her own great love by her shadow drawing -- a gift of drawing blindfolded which reveals somehow the deepest secrets of her subject. In the castle she is looking for a book of eternal life while mourning her own lost love for the wounded WWI veteran Mathieu, from whom she parted for fear something would happen to him through his closeness to her. The passages with Mathieu in particular are utterly enchanting, so real, quite sweeping you away into all the mystical and beautiful places love can take you. As usual with the books of M.J. Rose, I was utterly fascinating with every page, wondering how on earth it would end for Delphine, her brother, her delicious, wounded, strong and gifted lost lover, and all the journeys of searching and finding where there are always "shadows between the words."Tags : The Library of Light and Shadow: A Novel [M. I have never been disappointed by M J Rose. Her way of intertwining mystical with history leaves me wanting more. This book sheds more light on all the Daughters of La Lune. This is a story of, romance, supernatural, occult, and historical post WW1 in France. I love this series and will recommend and re-read.
A new generation of LaLune daughters, with a mixture of art, magick, and shadows merging with passion. 1920's artists and musicians of Paris and New York seemlessly make appearances with the fictional characters drawing the reader into the story with a realistic touch entwined with fantasy.
In the end we have to confront our own shadows....and perhaps that's the point of this compelling book.
I have bought all of her books in this series. The writing improves with each book forwards. You can easily see the descriptive historic faction. Of course we don't really know how the people felt, but she tell it so well it is believable. Hope there are more coming.
I haven't read the other books in this series but this book stood alone. Apparently it's a family of witches, each with a different "gift". This woman's gift is that she can paint your darkest secrets while being blindfolded. I enjoyed the book.
I am so disappointed. I was hoping to discover an authentic novel of historical fiction, and the gothic overlay of a ghost and the occult added to the appeal. Throwing around a few names and places does not create historical fiction and just saying that there once was a ghost does not create suspense. It seems to me that this "author" has come up with a few buzz words and ideas that many people respond to and is writing from a formula instead of from her own emotional depth. If she is not invested in the story, we can't be either. Even the love story and sex scenes feel flat.
I think I am going to have to give up and throw it in the trash, and as much as I love books that is almost painful.
MJ Rose does it again! Great story about the La Luna legacy. The bond between a brother and sister and what one would do to make the other dependent on them, the belief that what happened in the mind would happen in real life and make a woman deeply in love leave a country and her love to save his life. The artistry of what the mind can do. I so very much love this book. I am very much looking forward to another master piece written by MJ Rose!!
At its heart, Library is a coming of age story about a young woman who surrenders responsibility for her life to others, such as her mother and particularly her twin brother, until a series of events bring home to her the importance of directing her own life. An artist who reveals secrets through her drawings and subjects who persist in requesting her services despite having hidden dark secrets is an original and fascinating premise and touches on something true about human nature. MJ Rose creates a melancholic, poignant and sometimes ominous atmosphere. I would definitely recommend the book, although its flaws include an utter lack of humor, and I often find characters who take themselves so seriously a bit ridiculous. The book alternates between the present and the past, as represented in Delphine's journal. I dislike repeated interruptions in the flow of a narrative so I usually skip or skim the "past" portions and read only the present ones, which is what I did here. So I did not absorb much of the "erotica" to which some other reviewers object. While I have no objection to "erotica," per se, I do agree that too many authors confuse it with romance. Glorious classical romances like Jane Eyre are devoid of overt erotica, which allows readers' emotional responses to build uninterrupted. I sometimes wonder whether publishers pressure writers to include sex scenes and whether those publishers are predominantly male. If so, they may not understand that for many of us women, it is strong emotional feelings that trigger sexual desire. To shift from emotional landscapes to sex scenes actually diminishes the very factor that arouses erotic feelings in the first place.
