Taken by Midnight The Midnight Breed Book 8 Lara Adrian Books Reviews
In my last review I wonder how long would it be before I got Jena's story. It only lasted for the few minutes it took to open up "Taken by Midnight". This is Jena and Brock's story, and a good one it was.
I think I have Jena somewhat figured out, why haven't the rest come to it yet? Maybe for suspense? Have I got it wrong? Wouldn't be the first time. A writer's imagination is not to be taken lightly. My good writers have messed with my mind before in so - so many ways. But then that's why we read isn't gals?
Enough of this chit chat Girls, it's time to dive into Hunter's story. Talk later ~P~
Other reviewers (and the product blurb) do a great job summarizing the plot...but I will give a tiny bit of background.
This book is part of a series about a secret-band-of-warrior-vampires-living-apart-from-the-rest-of-their-kind-while-acting-as-the-protectors-of-the-race. Not exactly an unheard of theme in the realm of paranormal romance. But do the other authors add in the aliens-from-outer-space plot-line??? (Well, some might, but I haven't read them if they exist). In the case of the Midnight Breed series the stories are compelling, interesting, sexy, and the type of books to keep you up at night to finish. Any similarities to other books with said theme are only positive. And, oddly enough, the aliens-from-space theme actually works (and works well) despite how it might sound.
Taken by Midnight is the #8 book of the Midnight Breeds, and this far into a series is where I start to get a little leery about jumping the shark. For this series I found #7 to be a less riveting read than some of the earlier ones, so I was concerned. Thankfully my worries were unfounded.
My concerns
1. Will the book be too formulatic and boring? Nope, lots of fresh ideas, and definitely NOT boring.
2. Will it be better than the last one? YES.
3. Are the romantic leads too much like the ones in previous books? Not at all. The Brock/Jenna pairing is unique.
4. Is there still a good plot-line? Yes-in fact I really liked how much the overall story-arc has advanced.
5. Do I care about who comes next in the series? Heck yes! I can't wait to see how Hunter loses his virginity.
6. Are old characters still around? Yes, and in a sensible, plot-advancing, interesting sort of way, NOT as a draped about the furniture just to say the name sort of way.
7. And most importantly--is there some good nookie, but as good as the nookie is, is the plot better? Ding-Ding, we have a winner!!!
If you haven't read the series yet, then go get started! If you are wondering if the series is still going strong then the answer is an unequivocal YES. I'm just glad the next book isn't a whole year away.
Oh, and definitely start on book one Kiss of Midnight A Midnight Breed Novel (The Midnight Breed) () or Kiss of Midnight (The Midnight Breed, Book 1) (paperback)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those angsty paranormal romance loving readers.

What I Loved I loved how this book was a huge catalyst in pushing forward the story of the fight between Dragos and The Order. Most of all though, I love the story of Brock and Jenna. This is probably going down as my second favorite love story in the series. Both of them had so much they needed to heal from past relationships and so much they had to handle in the present, that theirs was such a classic love story. Could love conquer all? She was not a breedmate only human, neither were interested in love, and most of all were the ramifications they were having to deal with based on what happened to Jenna at the end of the last book. I won't give anything away but their journey to each other was just a wonderful read!
What I Liked We got to reconnect with all the Breed and their Breedmates. The book personified why I am a series reader, I love seeing what characters I care about are doing now. This book also opened up a huge realm of possibilities on where the series can go from here from what is happening to Jenna (the ramifications of the attack from the last book) to what happened at the end (which I won't give away). I am excited to see what happens next.
Complaints I wasn't a big fan of the abrupt end but I kind of see where there was no other choice. I will be waiting for the next book!
Why I gave it a 4 I realize this book is one that mostly just pushes the story forward but to me it is one of the best love stories of the series. Brock and Jenna are the reason this book is so good. Their story is well worth the read as well as the leaps forward the overall story takes.
Who I would recommend it too PNR readers. However, I will say this. If you haven't read the rest of the series, you can read this one but you won't get the richness of the bonds all the characters feel towards each other. Lara does an excellent job of giving you the background story without hitting you over the head with it but you would be missing an excellent progression of story if you just skipped ahead to this book. Read the series, it is well worth the time!
