Dark Wolf Carpathian Novel A Christine Feehan Books
After reading Fen's book, I was a little disappointed with how short changed it felt he and Tatjana were in the romance plot department. I didn't know it could get worse.I've been waiting for Skyler and Dmitri's book for nearly 20 books now... At least since Gabriel's story when we first met them and realized they were lifemates. I can't believe that after all this time and all the build up to their storyline, THIS is the treatment they get. Maybe it's because of Skyler's age but this book reads like a racy YAF-type book. If I was asked to describe it, I'd say it's more about the potential Lycan-Carpathian war than it is about Skyler and Dmitri.
It is palpably obvious that this sange-rau/Han- ku-whatever theme is being dragged out for the trilogy. This book spent most of the time dealing with this issue and to no effect, no significant progress was made from Fen's book and we didn't even get another party to show off all the cute Carpathian kiddies.
I've been so excited anticipating this book, I even pre-ordered it and kept checking from midnight release day whether it had loaded up on my kindle. I have to say I'm disappointed. Obviously this is readable because it's Christine Feehan but it also feels really disjointed, rushed and has lost the basic thing the author is awesome at- writing about the healing power of love for a damaged hero/heroine. This book to me was mostly spells, chants, all those things that the author has gotten more into the last 10 or so books. I could have done with fewer pages of Skyler's mage spells and a little more of her and Dmitri's romantic relationship.
Where this book shines is the times Sky and Dmitri are together. His consideration, understanding and love for her and her willingness to sacrifice her life for him. I think one thing a lot of people wondered about was how she would deal with the intense sexual relationship between lifemates given her past and it is certainly something she and Dmitri discuss in this book but the resolution is rather rushed, understandable given that we're treated to pages upon pages of spells, battles and diplomatic negotiation. Another place this book shines is in Skyler's interactions with Josef and Paul both of whom I absolutely love. Sure she reads as rather young in these but she IS only 19 (even though at times she seemed a little younger than this like maybe fifteen or so ;) ).
My main complaint with this book is the same as my main complaint with the previous book, Fen's book. This is not a story about Skyler and Dmitri, it's a story featuring them that is about a potential war. It's an action adventure type book with romantic elements. My second major complaint is that I'm beginning to feel like the story arch is being deliberately stretched out to fit round a trilogy or something. This isn't new. The De La Cruz vs Malinov storyline lasted several books as well but you felt like each one could stand alone with a beginning and end and each one had a distinct plot and angle and identifiable lead characters so no one was being shortchanged and it didn't feel like one continuous book split into several parts. These last 2 books, particularly this one, aren't standalones. As far as I'm concerned, this book could have ended a quarter of the way through once Dmitri was rescued for all the progress that was made the remaining three-quarters of the book because the rest of the book just sets up Zev and Bronnie's book (and hopefully the conclusion of this unnecessarily long-drawn out Sange Rau madness).
I'll get the next book because I'm a sucker for Feehan and want to see how all this ends. But I really wish she could go back to more of a character relationship focus in her books because that is where they shine. I don't mind a little action and adventure or even chants and recitations since this has become "a thing" the last 10 or so books , this is after all, the dark series with mages and things that go bump in the night, but it shouldn't take the place of the relationships and romance that I think drew a lot of people to this series in the first place.

Dark Wolf Carpathian Novel A Christine Feehan Books Reviews
I wanted to give this book five stars, considering the long anticipated wait for Skyler and Dimitri's story. I am a HUGE fan of Feehan; however, I felt a tiny bit cheated after reading this one. First, I felt that Skyler's character was a little less developed than I thought it should be. I realize she was still a teenager, and she had gone through so much in her lifetime but I sort of missed the storyline buildup of her trust in Dimitri, although they had communicated during her college years. I wanted to read it, so It seemed rather sudden to me. The last time I read about Skyler was when she was helping Ivory to save Gregory's twins and was just getting used to the fact of Dimitri as her lifemate. Before then, she was a frightened child in Dark Celebration. In this book, she is very powerful but still half child/half grown which teenagers are, but I wish CF would have made her perhaps a little older, maybe early twenties. For instance, Carpathian mating is extremely intense, but it felt just a little off, because she still seemed so young. It was a tad uncomfortable reading about a teen having that kind of sex although Dimitri was great with her. I liked the action in the story and the buildup to Zev's book, but it left this story unfinished. The thing that really irked me was that the story ended at 86% and left me thinking, where the hell is the rest of the story??? I take a bathroom break, come back and turn the page and the story is over? That's it??IMO Razvan and Ivory's story was MUCH better than this and would have been well worth the $. It's still a good book and will not deter me from purchasing more; however, with the next books, I'll just be a little less eager, wait until they're cheaper, or wait for them to come out in paperback (*sigh*).
Since so many others posted such great comments about their disappointment in Ms Feehan's recent writing of the "Dark" series books; I will say that I totally agree with them. Besides so many of their comments were worded better than what I could have said. So I will just add a few of my comments to the fact the I so anxiously awaited Skylar and Dimitri's story because Ms Feehan had built such a great character connection buildup between Skylar's and Dimitri's storyline throughtout her previous books; I was jumping for joy and was hoping their story was going to be as good or better than Rafael and his lifemate in Dark Secret book. Talk about being shocked and let down. I felt like someone punched me in the gut; my disappointment hit me that hard. The Skylar and Dimitri in this book were like two different characters altogether. IMO they were not the people the author had wrote about with such verve and passion in the buildup of their characters in her previous books when they were mentioned in the storyline. As a result I have backed off purchasing a Dark series books from Ms Feehan. The only one I have purchased was Dark Ghost. I started reading it, but stopped simply because it became too confusing to me and I started coming across spelling errors. I will just go back a start reading from the beginning with Dark Prince, Dark Magic and Dark Secret, etc. At least those books had great in your face and heart storylines. Plus I simply can't afford to buy these books anymore, especially since when they are such letdown.
